QuTech sponsors the Adelaide Optics Chapter’s Scientific Photography Competition.

The Adelaide Optics Chapter (AOC) is hosting its 2025 Scientific Photography Competition, open to all South Australian residents. The competition offers $800 in prizes and is affiliated with National Science Week #scienceweek. Submissions close on August 8th, 2025.

Participants can submit up to five images, each accompanied by a 100-word explanation detailing the science captured. The competition aims to showcase science in action, from grand phenomena like rainbows to small details like ripples.

There are eight prize categories, including special awards for submissions uplifting indigenous scientific or cultural knowledge, entries from regional and remote communities, and junior explorers (12 years and under) and youth (13-18 years) awards. General excellence awards include QuTech’s Prize for Most Creative Photography, IPAS’ Prize for Written Science Communication, and IPAS’ Prize for Everyday Science in Action. The IPAS People’s Choice Awards will be decided by public vote via social media and anonymous voting at the exhibition. All other awards will be selected by a panel of judges. Prizes are awarded as $50 gift cards for each award category.

All submitted photos and descriptions will be displayed at an exhibition at the University of Adelaide’s North Terrace campus on August 28th, 2025. Further information will be distributed to participants closer to the date and through AOC’s social media platforms.

Participants retain copyright but grant organisers license to use submissions for promotional, educational, or exhibition purposes. Submissions must be original, reside in South Australia, and not use AI generation.
