Adelaide Optics Chapter Science Photography Competition Celebrates the Beauty of Science.
The Adelaide Optics Chapter (AOC) brought science and creativity together at its 2026 Scientific Photography Competition and Exhibition, showcasing striking images and stories from photographers of all ages and backgrounds.
Held at the Adelaide Australian Space Discovery Centre in Lot Fourteen, the exhibition invited the public to explore science through photography, highlighting everything from cutting-edge research and environmental science to everyday scientific phenomena observed through a creative lens. The competition was open to school students, university students, researchers and members of the wider community, creating a diverse and engaging collection of entries.
The exhibition celebrated not only the visual impact of scientific images but also the stories behind them, encouraging participants to communicate scientific concepts in accessible and inspiring ways. Supported by a range of sponsors and partners, including QuTech, the event demonstrated the power of photography as a tool for science communication and public engagement.
Award Winners
One of the evening’s highlights was the announcement of the competition winners.
The QuTech People’s Choice Award was presented to “Jumping Raindrops” by Penny D. in the Junior Explorer category (12 years and under). Penny’s image captured raindrops splashing in puddles following a rainy weekend in Port Pirie, revealing the fascinating ripple patterns created when water droplets bounce from a surface.
A second People’s Choice Award was awarded to “Frosty Bubbles” by Angus B., also in the Junior Explorer category. The photograph transformed the everyday experience of condensation on a frosty car window into a captivating study of light, reflections and natural patterns.
The QuTech Written Science Communication Award was awarded to Juan S. for “Counting Seagrass”. Through both image and narrative, Juan described the challenges of conducting ecological fieldwork underwater, illustrating how seagrass monitoring contributes to understanding the health of vital marine ecosystems. His accompanying explanation demonstrated the importance of clear and engaging science communication.
Inspiring Future Scientists
A particularly rewarding aspect of the competition was the strong participation from young photographers. Entries from school-aged students demonstrated remarkable curiosity and observational skills, reinforcing the competition’s goal of fostering an appreciation of science among future generations.
